I’m surprised I haven’t done a post of this before because it’s one of my BIG pet peeves. I know I will offend some people but I really don’t care.
KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH when in an unfenced area!
Reasons:
#1. It’s the law in most places
#2. Safety of humans and other dogs. True story – someone I know let their 6-year old daughter take their tiny toy dog out to use the bathroom. She opens the door and the dog runs out off a leash. A BIG dog being walked on a leash is nearby and lunges at the tiny dog knocking the woman down and busting her two front teeth out. Not to mention the big dog snapped the neck of the little dog and killed her. In front of the 6-year old child.
If the dog had been on a leash it might have been a different story? I don't know but they weren't able to file any charges because their dog WASN'T on a leash and it's the law here in NC.
Buddy is always on a leash when not in a fenced in area. I would never just open the door and watch while he uses the bathroom with people walking by, cars driving by and who knows what else.
This morning I was walking Budster and all of a sudden there is this big black dog right on top of us jumping on me while I’m in my work clothes, and distracting my dog from using the bathroom while I’m under tight deadline to get to work.
The owner? At the door yelling for the dog to come back.
Get off your lazy butt and walk your dog.
It’s just rude.
I have experienced this time and time again and it totally drives me crazy.
One time I was enjoying a walk around my parents neighborhood in suburban Atlanta and a door pops open and a pit bull runs up to Buddy. The owner proceeds to yell and tell the dog to come back. Are you freaking serious? I was PISSED off.
That’s my rant for today. What are your thoughts on people letting their dogs out without being on a leash?
Later tonight I’ll try and post an update on our gas spill in the JEEP. Interesting indeed.
And yes, note this picture below. Buddy IS on a leash.
I ALWAYS.ALWAYS have him on a leash when hiking as well. I should have mentioned that at the top of this post.
It's really risky to not keep them on a leash when on trails. I heard of one person's dog jumping off the top of the summit at Crowder's Mountain in Gaston County.
Tootles.

I totally agree. Especially since even when your dog is good under voice control they can't resist when they see another dog. I always get annoyed when I'm walking my dog and a loose dog comes up to us. My dog gets protective and then I look like I have a pyscho dog. Unfortunately we've been attacked before (my dogs on leash) theirs not. So I don't take my chances.
Dogs are like kids - a lot of people don't know how to take care of them! Case in point in the post today!!
Well...I grew up with my dogs never on leashes. Except when in really crowded places (which I guess was hardly ever!) My sister has 3 dogs and I don't think they are ever leashed, but then again they spend most of their time at her horse farm! If the dogs are well behaved it doesn't bother me if they aren't leashed.
leashes are a must! Your dog might be well behaved but someone elses is not, like mine! so if an unleased dog comes up to precious, she will start a fight
We have to keep ours on a leash, they'd take off the first chance they got if we didn't lol. Our neighbor has a pit bull and a lab and they're always getting out. Nothing like taking your dogs out first thing in the morning and being greeted by two huge not so friendly dogs.
One of my best friends was attacked by two pitbulls why the owner watched...and did nothing. I think they should be outlawed.
Brown Eyed said it best. We walk the dogs a lot and leashes are standard. No exception.
I'm am just as concerned about a lawsuit as I am about bothering someone!
Amen! And I could say that over and over again!
Hayden is always on a leash unless we let her out our back and that is somewhere she can't go anywhere.
The other thing that gets me is people who have large dogs but can't control them. Especially if they're aggressive. I've had a Rottweiler snarling & jumping at Hayden while the owner struggled to control it. Drives me crazy.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. I hope you'll be out on the lake!
This is a hard one for me.. My dog Bondi comes to work with me and is never on a leash int he office because everyone knows and loves him here. He is also never on a leash to/from my car and he stays right by my side. It has never been a problem. Now with Homie (even though he's just a pup) we have him on a leash ALL THE TIME because he JUMPS on people if he's not on a leash so it's just a respect thing. But both of them are off leash if we are camping (secluded, not camp ground) and sometimes hiking depending on the trail. Most trails we go on I have yet to see a leashed dog in the PNW. Maybe different kinds of trails, we'll only see a few people in a few hrs, but almost always with unleashed dogs. Anyway, I totally udnerstand peoples sentiments about not wanting dogs jumping on them, there's nothing more obnoxious than a 'bad' dog with a clueless owner
