Home Economics?
My Charlotte blogging buddy Teresa gave me the inspiration for today's post. She posted about her and her niece getting a sewing machine for Christmas.
She made a pair of pants and was asking what else to make. She also mentioned that she had not sewn since Home Economics class in 7th grade. Well guess what?! Me either!
I seriously can't sew a button(I've tried). The seamstress in our house is Brad! He even mentioned he wouldn't mind having a sewing machine! WTH!?
Going back to the Home Economics class. I totally remember taking it. The first half of the year was the cooking portion(which I loved) and the 2nd half was the sewing(which I hated). My Mom even finished my project for me. My brother was in the class during that same time and made a better grade then me!
My Mom was/is a master seamstress and used to make all of our clothes. Like this little gem of a dress. Forget that I was in a totally awkward stage in life and have bruises all over my legs from playing outside.
Yep.. pink.
My question is -- do you remember taking Home Economics and do schools still even offer it? It is basic things you need to know in life. I hear some colleges actually offer something like this to freshman to teach them how to do laundry, etc.
Different Generation I suppose.
Well, that's all I have for today!

I took Home Ec in 7th grade. I hated to sew but loved it when we got to cook.
I think I took it in 10th grade but it was more about how to balance a check book and stuff like that.
Your mom and Iddy need to start a business.
There is home eco offered these days in the high schools but most of the kitchen and home technogy has changed. Once upon a time sewing used to be the economical way to go if you wanted to have a dress, pants, whatever. These days with recycling and overseas labor, that's no longer the case. I'd say most who sew or put out money for a machine really want to do the hands on-design end of sewing. To be able to create.
Despite a year of home-ed and a coterie of aunts and mom who sewed, personally, it took me forever (about ten years)to learn it as a skill.
I remember taking it in the 6th grade. We had to sew an apron...I was all excited to pick out my fabric and thread. I hated the sewing machine. That little needle scares me. It moves too fast and could do some serious damage. I also remember having to make biscuits from scratch. I loved that!! I made them everyday for months.
I skipped it in highschool. I took Dance instead (you had to take something in Fine Arts). I wish I would have learned to sew but sine my mom and Granny sewed for me I didn't think I needed it. My MIL is a great seamstress too and bought me a machine this summer. I have barely used it and need to think of a project (and find some time). Got any ideas?
Blake is the only one who irons in this house. I can't. So, I don't try.
I don't really remember home ec - but that picture definitely brought back memories - my mom has my grandmother's old Singer that looks just like that!
We did cooking home ec in 7th grade and then did sewing in 8th. Most of my class made "hammer pants", but I made a sad sad bag. I really have no desire to sew, but I have a pretty nice sewing kit and do minor button repairs. I ALWAYS have buttons to fix on my snazzy work blazers.........
Alayna..yes, they are snazzy and BRIGHT!
As for what to make Donatelli? hmm.. like I told Teresa. Throw pillows.
Nice ones for the house!
Casey - I can't believe you don't iron?!
Casey also forgot to mention that Blake needs a gallon of starch to get the job done. True story.
I LOVED home ec! I sewed an ice cream cone pillow (WTF?). I can sew now, but not as well with a machine. I want one, though. I should have asked for one for Christmas.
I loved Home Ec!!! I am going to take a sewing class to improve my skills...hopefully I can make some pillows, curtains, etc.
I can't sew for the life of me. Wish I could, but I'm with you. Can't even sew a button!
And don't worry, Casey... we don't even own an ironing board, so there's no ironing going on in our house either.
I don't even remember taking Home Ec?? I'm sure I did, but I guess I've blocked it out of my mind. Hmmm.....
