The USO - Until Everyone Comes Home

Some of you know that I'm from a military family and we are very passionate about supporting the troops no matter what! My Dad is a retired Lt. Colonel in the Army and for years he and my Mom have been involved with the USO. They've spent many nights/days/weekends at the Atlanta airport serving food and welcoming troops home from war and one year during the holidays -- my Dad even shipped Christmas trees to Iraq for the guys and gals in the desert!

I was so inspired by their dedication to this cause that I decided to become involved with the Charlotte USO about 2 years ago. The Queen City USO provides support to the troops and their families that are stateside while their loved one is away - but the main service provided is the center/lounge at the Charlotte airport.

I volunteer out there twice and month and truly enjoy meeting the active duty, reserve and retired military troops and their families that are welcomed into the center. As you can see in pictures below - it's a place where those who have served/serving our country can stop by on a layover and enjoy free food, a place to sleep, a place for their kids to play, etc. Not every airport has one - but there are more than you think. For more information on the USO in your area - visit http://www.uso.org/

Welcome to the USO!

A hallway full of coins given to the center from the troops that have stopped in.

Free food and drinks(non-alcoholic)

The lounge - complete with recliners and a flat screen TV.

The child play area in the center. There's a TV and DVD player in there too.
