Jr. League Wine Tasting Party

This year marks 10-years that I've been a member of the Junior League of Charlotte.

No doubt, joining is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Yes, it's a time commitment but I'm able to contribute to our community all while making lasting friendships.

 

We have monthly meetings but in the last few years they've converted a few of the meetings to in-home, small group meetings.

These are my favorite!!

 

Last night I attended a small group meeting at a member's home and it's by far the best I've ever been to.

After the business portion of the meeting, Mary Sherrill did a wine tasting that was also a competition!

She asked everyone to bring 2 bottles of wine under $10.

One that you would put in for tasting and to compete with and the other bottle would go into the prize pool.



Of course she had nibbles for all of us ladies.

What would a party be without cupcakes?

Wine tasting means there HAS to be cheese!

Back to the wine tasting.

So, how it works.

Everyone picks which bottle that they brought that they want entered into the competition.

Mary Sherrill kept track of who brought what and put all the wines in paper bags with numbers on them.

She knew that my bottle was, you say, #1.

The paper bag part is brilliant because then people can't be swayed by fancy labels or brands.

Smart.Smart.Smart.

Then we split into two groups.

Depending on what wine you chose to compete with you were either in the red wine room or white wine room.

It seemed most of the ladies brought and chose to taste reds.

Literally,

There were only 3 or 4 people in the white room.

(which also means there wasn't as much competition - sorta wish i would have been in that room)

The red group was so big that we actually split up into 2 groups in there.

Half of us tasted about 8-wines and the other half tasted the other 8-wines.

We had a sheet and rated them 1 to 10.

In the end the person who brought the favorite wines of the 3 groups(2 red groups and 1 white group), got to take home wine in the prize pool!

 

Giving there was 25 people there that means there were 25-bottles of wine split between 3 women to take home!!!

Gosh, I wish I would have won!

Such a fun idea for a party.

She said she has been to several parties like this with friends and that's where she got the idea.

Of course, this was my first rodeo but I am a huge fan and can't wait to get a group of ladies to do this with!





But, of course the highlight of the night was seeing this sign proudly displayed in her home.

Mary Sherril's husband is from the town of Shelby.

White - Vinho Rose
Red - Smoking Loon Pinot Noir
Red - Cantina Del Grifone 1967 Toscana 2009

Beaujolais Festival 2013

Every year the 3rd Thursday of November marks the day that the new bottles of the French wine, Beaujolais are cracked open.

And, every year, Charlotte's Mayor International Cabinet hosts a Festival in celebration.

One of my good friends has been the organizer of the event for the last several years so I always look forward to it.

 Beaujolais wines are all red and a little on the dry side.

To be honest, they're not my favorite, but the event is.

 This year's Festival was held at Charlotte's new location for Foundation for the Carolinas in Uptown.

Aside from wine there was munchies including fruit, cheese and meats.

 There was music....

 And, great company.

My friends Kelli and Amanda met me there.

 Love when Kelli wears her hair straight!

 The event was a great way to get out and mingle along with checking out the art in the Foundation.

 This was by far my favorite piece.

I can see this hanging in a study or even a little boy's room.

 The evening wrapped up with a fencing demonstration which I found fascinating!

To think that it's an Olympic sport does still blow my mind though!

San Francisco Part Three - Napa Valley Continued

Day Two in the Napa Valley was a big and long one.

It started at 10am when our driver(that we hired for the day)picked us up from our hotel.

When Kathleen and I were planning our trip I knew we needed to go to Sterling Vineyards.

I went there my very first visit to the Valley back in 1999 and was overwhelmed at the awesome views.

Sterling is located in Calistoga and sits on top of a mountain.

When you arrive you buy a ticket for the gondola(which also includes a tasting), and you're on your way.

 Great views from up there of the vineyards and the Napa Valley countryside.

 It's only a 3-minute ride to the top and when you get up there the tasting is spread out throughout the grounds.

Such a nice touch versus standing at yet another tasting bar.

(which brad and dean were neither a fan of)

 So, you take your taste and check out the grounds which are awesome.

This is the view from the lower portion of the winery estate.

 Then you make your way a level up and there is yet another tasting.

 There you can check out the view and take a few pictures like we did because again...it's awesome.

 I think this might be one of my favorite pictures from our entire trip.

 Then you make your way up to their rooftop terrace which is the highlight.

There was another tasting there and views to boot!

 Another of my favorites I plan on framing!

 After snapping dozens of pictures and finishing our tastes we decided to order a cheese tray and get single glasses of wine.

No worries, by this time it was 11:45am.

HAAA!!

 The view, atmosphere and company were too much not to take more time and enjoy.

 When getting back into the car with our driver to head to our next stop everyone agreed that it was the VERY BEST winery to start our day.

So, remember that if you're planning a trip out there.

Our next winery reservation wasn't for a couple of hours so our driver suggested a smaller vineyard that happens to be one of her favorites.

Lava Vine.

This place is smaller but VERY popular.

 Their wine club has a huge waiting list and the winemakers and employees are known for being fun, laid back and entertaining.

 Their wine was AWESOME!

 Sadly it can't be bought in stores.

I bought a bottle of the grenache for our Thanksgiving meal.

 We all agreed this was our favorite winery of the entire trip.

 Partly that was because they played music for us!

 Bluegrass music at that!

Couldn't ask for more!

This place was far from stuffy.

 Our tasting was rounded out with their superb olive oil.

They let us sample it over dark chocolate with a little bit of salt.

 HOLY MOLY!

It was to die for!

 We were having so much that we had our driver go to a nearby market and pick up sandwiches and we decided to picnic on the grounds.

 Then our driver Deb joined us for a photo!

What was even funnier while at Lava Vine is that they had a chicken that kept jumping up and eating grapes.

Hysterical.

I should have videotaped it!

 

As you can imagine, by this point we all had a good buzz going but had one more stop to make.

The Franks Family Vineyard.

This place is very well known because the owner was a big-wig at Disney and produced shows like MASH.

Their grounds were very pretty.

 And, their wines were/are delish.

 It was also very fun to see all the famous people who have visited.

 Oprah is big buds with the owners.

 The guys opted out of a tasting and went straight for a bottle.

Kathleen and I decided to still do a tasting.

 All in all, we really liked Franks Family but I'm not sure that I was so overwhelmed that I would go back.

Saying that.. I would buy their wine.

After that our day of wineries was over and that's really were my pictures end.

Unfortunately, we didn't get one.single.picture of us all dressed up for our big dinner at Auberge du Soleil.

Probably a little too much wine early in the day.

You think?
