She was so crafty and domestic when I was growing up and was always trying to teach me things.
I had no interest whatsoever.
She was cake decorator extraordinaire among other things.
Now......
I'm getting into it.
Not cakes.. but cookies.
Or, at least I think?

My Mom bought me this cookie cutter for Christmas.

She figured, aside from cookies I could use it to cut finger sandwiches for parties.
After deciding we were going to have a Mardi Gras themed Super Bowl party I just knew I had to use the cutter to make cookies!!
As I mentioned yesterday, my neighbor is a quite the baker!
So, she agreed to help me make sure these cut out cookies were perfect!
(Just so you know, I'm good a drop cookies not cutouts~)
Friday night she came over and helped me
She advised me that when working with sugar cookie dough you have to keep it chilled.
So, I only made a few cookies at a time and put the dough back into the freezer.

Then, after cutting them out I put them into the fridge for a short time because she told me if not they might 'swell'.
So, here's what I came out with.
We left our task of making the icing and decorating to Saturday night.
I was going to try and do it alone but after looking at LeAnne's recipe I got intimidated and made her come over and guide me through.

I decided on green and yellow icing.
I wanted purple but didn't feel like running to the store once again so I used what I had in the house.

The icing is a mixture of meringue powder, sifted powered sugar and water.
Which, just so you know, meringue powder is a bitch to find in stores.

You pretty much have to buy it in a store with a Wilton section.
The first step is making a border on your cookies using an icing bag and fine tip.
LeAnne assures me that it takes practice to get this down to a pretty fine line.

The second step is to add a few teaspoons of water to the icing to fill in the border and smooth on the cookie.
Not too bad but I wasn't overly pleased.

That's when I remembered that I had some green sparkles leftover from Christmas cookies that we added.
Not too bad for my first time at this!

The yellow didn't turn out as good but, again, my first time!
I let them dry overnight and then the next morning put them in treat bags and wrapped up with a bow for party favors!
Aside from the cookies I made, LeAnne made football cake pops to be used as party favors for our Super Bowl party too!

So, there you have it!
My first attempt at 'real' cookie making.
I'm already planning on the next ones I'm going to make and give as gifts.
Shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day then crosses for Easter!
Maybe this is my new 'thing?'
We will see!
Sure is time consuming but it's so fulfilling to see your cookies in the end!
Are any of you really into this type of baking?
They are a million times better then our Christmas cookies. I used my finger to spread the icing!
ReplyDeleteThe tips about the dough are really helpful. If I ever get the nerve to try again, I'll remember that. I'm a terrible baker b/c I'm just not good at all with being precise...with anything! Y'all did a great job!

ReplyDeleteYour cookies look GREAT!! Sugar cookies are funny, you really do have to practice to get that icing perfect (at least I have had to) but in time yours will start to look even more perfect. Great job!
