Mardi Gras and Maw Maw

Today is Fat Tuesday and generally I would be posting about all my fun Mardi Gras memories like I did last year.
Read here and here.

This year -- not so much. While I've been admiring everyone's pictures and status updates on Facebook I've been thinking about something else the past few days.

Photo from Orpheus last night - courtesy here.
I've been thinking of my 95-year old grandmother aka 'Maw Maw'.

Those who have been reading my blog for a while now have read about her before. After falling and breaking her leg she moved out of her house of 60-something years and moved here to Charlotte to live with my cousin.

That was 7-months ago.

This past week she went into the hospital because she was in pain and not eating well.
On Friday we got the news. Maw Maw has kidney cancer among other issues where she can't do surgery.
They told us Maw Maw would need to move to a Hospice Home nearby. My Dad and I were there visitng her when we got the news and Maw Maw was talking and being her old self. Her spunky ole' self.

The next morning she quit responding and hasn't responded since. Saturday night I was there with my cousins when she was moved into the home.

Let me tell you people. When I saw Maw Maw in that state it was SUPER.SAD
She has lived a long time and survived a lot of tragedy and I really thought I would never see her like that.

My Dad traveled back to Charlotte late last night and I went up there again to visit.

Right now -- she's resting comfortably and we're in a waiting period. They say she's in no pain and can hear us.

That's all I have for now. I wanted to update everyone.

Here's a few pictures I ran across on my computer. Brad meeting Maw Maw for the first time in October of 2009 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
We caught the moment on camera.

Sorry for the sad post. I will keep you updated. Love you Maw Maw!

So sorry to hear your sad news. I am actually going through the exact same thing with my Granny. A few weeks ago after a bad fall, we found she can cancer all over the dang place, brain tumor, lungs, and lymph nodes. I went to visit with her in February and she was just as you said her old spunky self. She has support from hospice and we are sticking with the plan to keep her pain free. It's so hard to know the end is near and that a quick decline is inevitable, but I'm so grateful for the time I was able to spend with her, and the wonderful memories we share. I'll be praying for you and your family-hope you can find joyful memories in this sad time and this time next year…laissez les bon temps rouler.

I just went through all this with my mawmaw so I know exactly how you feel. Seeing them like that, not themselves, is very difficult. Hang in there and know that lots of love and prayers are going your way. Visit with her as much as you can and talk about all the wonderful memories you have! Call if you want/need to chat!

I'm so sorry sweetie :( My granparents were all gone before I was born, but I did lost my dad. That's all I can compare it to, and believe me...I know what watching an amazing person you love lay there not responding is like. It's horrible.

I'm so, so thankful that they say she isn't in pain and can hear you :)

Thinking about you!
