Traveling to Arkansas to see Uncle David

I just booked a ticket to Arkansas for Easter weekend. All of my extended family lives in Hot Springs, Arkansas and I’m going to pay a visit to my ailing Uncle David.

My family is a little different in that my Mom’s the baby of 6 children all of whom are at least 12 years older than her. Their mother passed away when my Mom was only 3-years old so they all pitched in and helped my grandfather raise her.
Giving that – they all treat me like a granddaughter – especially my Mom’s only sister and her husband who my Mom lived with much of her time growing up, they’re my Aunt Jane and Uncle David.

Uncle David really has been the only sort of grandfather figure I’ve ever known in my whole life and I believe he thinks of me as a granddaughter. Uncle David is suffering from a terminal case of bone cancer right now though and it’s not looking good.

This last week they put him in the hospital because he has a tumor on his back that has eaten through part of his spinal cord and they’re doing heavy radiation to relieve him of some pain. We’re not sure when he’ll leave the hospital.

I’ve called and talked to him several times since he’s been in the hospital and he’s doing better but still in a lot of pain.
You can see in some of the pictures what a difference a year makes. The one above is of us at Thanksgiving and the two below are from the previous Thanksgiving.

Love you Uncle David and I can’t wait to see you!

Thanksgiving 2007 - this was just a month or so after he was diagnosed with bone cancer.

Aunt Jane and Uncle David or as some call them 'MaMos and PaPa'

I spent my childhood visiting Magnolia, Arkansas. I love it so much that I considered naming Lainey "Magnolia". Arkansas is a hidden gem.....so many great memories from there!
